Welcome and Spokane August 18, 1999
For those of you who haven’t heard, Dick and I are both now retired and starting our first year of world travels. We’ve now wended our way to Spokane, Washington. Our golf buddy, Stan Bailey, has generously let us live in his furnished condo for a week while he’s away. It’s walking distance from downtown, lots of restaurants, and the River Park with its waterfalls, amusement rides, IMAX Theater, and Opera House.
This has been a great week for downtown Spokane. The refurbished Nordstroms and the new AMC 22 movie theaters opened yesterday to much hoopla. The paper describes the new theaters as something that can only be found in cities like SF or Seattle! We’re planning to see a movie tonight, but have already checked out the new downtown complex. It’s reminiscent of Nordies in downtown SF with visible zigzagging escalators and shops on several floors; it is very nice. (I personally thought the best part was the free mint chocolates they were handing out for the Godiva grand opening). At any rate, this complex should really give a boost to the downtown area, which is small, next to the river and park, and clearly under-utilized.
