European Travelogues

We've now been around the world 5 times, with several stops in Europe each time. That's starting to be a lot of places, many of them worth writing about.

For three years we spent the entire summer in Europe (after having just spent a Kiwi summer in New Zealand -- this IS the life!).  It was Brussels in 2003, Munich in 2001 and Edinburgh in 2000.  Three great places, each with golf clubs nearby that we joined.  Besides exercise and fun, golf is a great way to meet the locals and make some friends.

The following list, alphabetical by country, hits all the highpoints.

Austria
Just a 4-day visit to Vienna, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Belgium
For the summer of 2003, we made our home base in Brussels.  It was an incredible summer weather-wise (warm with hardly any rain).  We can recommend this city as an excellent summer stopover.  We worked on our French, et ca va bien!

Germany
With a desire to improve our German, we spent the summer of '01 in in Grunewald, outside Munich.  We rented a small house, joined a golf club, and lived in Bavaria from June through Oktoberfest.  Sehr schoene!

Great Britain and Scotland
We spent the summer of 2000 in Great Britain, most of it in Scotland.  Living in Edinburgh suited us to a tee; a wonderful long stopover.  There would have been more travelogues, but I spilled a bit of my favorite Beringer White Zinfandel into my computer; it died.  Getting a replacement took a while and getting the hard drive transferred took more time.  Do avoid this!  But definitely put Edinburgh and Scotland on your travel wish-list .

Italy
It was a short 10 days in the Lombardy Region of Italy; the weather in May was wonderful and the scenery was brilliant.  Take a look.

Another wonderful May destination.  A few scenic drives, golf on the Algarve coast and a bit of sightseeing near Lisbon were all we could squeeze into two short weeks.

Turkey
In October, the weather in Turkey is perfect: warm days, cool evenings.  If not for the War on Terrorism, this secular Muslim country would be highly recommended.
