Flowers and Still Lifes / Edged                                                 December 2003

"Photoshopping", by which I mean manipulating digital images with Adobe Photoshop, is a fascinating pastime.  Lately it's been keeping me especially occupied, as I've been working my way through "Photoshop Elements 2: The Complete Reference"  by edgedKen Milburn and Gene Hirsh.  This is a great book.

If you're into digital processing, read on.  If not, just check out the photos below. FYI, these photos were creating using blending modes with layers.  Duplicate a layer and look at the layers palette.  Click where it says Normal, and you'll find about 20 blending modes that can be used to improve or modify your photographs.

For example, the 5 Stills in this collection were created from photos I took of objects around our house.  Processing included making a duplicate layer, using the edge filter (Filter, Stylize, Find Edges) and then using blending modes (especially overlay) with decreased opacity.  Photos are easily framed using the "Effects" Palette.  I REALLY like the look of these edged still lifes.

Some of the rose images below incorporate blending modes on duplicate layers as well, or the background has been blurred to improve the image; others have a layer with some watercoloring (Filter, Artistic, Watercolor) incorporated.  The options in Photoshop seem to be endless, and since I'm a scientist, I love to experiment!
